Overview:
Charles D. Herman, Inc. is looking for hardworking, motivated equipment operators to join our team. If hired, you’ll be an integral part of our crew, helping complete paving, concrete and excavating projects.
This position includes the operation of one or more of the following pieces of equipment: backhoe, skid steer, excavator, roller, paver, grader, and dozer.
Family owned and operated, Charles D. Herman, Inc. has been providing quality construction services throughout the Lehigh Valley for over 50 years.
Employees report to our location in Whitehall each morning for a daily meeting before loading any tools, supplies and equipment needed for that day’s job. Each day/week is different as we typically handle all site work involved with a project. Laborers may be placing stormwater pipe one day and paving the next. Opportunity for quick advancement to an equipment operator if desired.

Responsibilities:
- Lubricate machines daily and check fluids.
- Excavation of soils and pavement.
- Placement and fine grading of soils and aggregate.
- Compact soils, aggregate and asphalt material using vibratory rollers.
- Maintain a safe, clean and organized worksite.
- Maintain equipment and tools; grease equipment as needed, fuel equipment and tools daily, and keep vehicles clean and organized.
Equipment operators are expected to perform the duties of a Laborer if equipment is not needed to perform a task.
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of previous equipment operator experience required.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, perform physical labor and other strenuous physical tasks
- Ability to communicate effectively with crew members
- Understanding of fractions, inches and tenths
- Possess a strong work ethic and desire to learn
- Must be able to pass a drug screening
- A valid driver’s license is preferred but not required
- Experience in all of the above listed equipment is not required. Willing to train the right individual to operate other pieces of equipment.

- Assist equipment operators with excavating/milling of pavement and soil to required grade specifications using a shovel, pick, and/or rake.
- Assist equipment operators with placement and fine grading of soil and aggregate using a rake, string lines, tape measure and slope laser.
- Assist equipment operators with placement of asphalt and concrete material using shovels, asphalt rakes/lutes, and wheelbarrows.
- Compact construction materials using a vibratory plate, jumping jack and/or hand tamper.
- Build and position concrete forms and dismantle forms after use.
- Finish concrete curb, sidewalk and pads using hand floats, bull floats, edgers, groovers and brooms.
- Maintain a safe, clean and organized worksite.
- Maintain equipment and tools; grease equipment as needed, fuel equipment daily, and keep vehicles clean and organized.
